3D printing – Terminal One
I would like to share my latest idea from my Retron Print project.
A few weeks ago I came up with the idea of creating an iPhone theme imitating the classic Windows 95 operating system. I have very warm memories of Windows 95 from my youth. I decided to transfer this nostalgia to my personal phone. I count on Apple not to take away the rest of our civil rights and I can do it without fear of a lawsuit.
Anyway, after a few days of playing around with Photoshop and the shortcut app, the i95 was born. An Windows 95 theme for iOS. A package of icons and a few widgets, making iOS more like good old Windows 95.
I liked the graphical theme so much that I decided to go ahead and prepare an enclosure in the spirit of the first computers with a graphical user interface.
After completing the references, I started searching for the right shape. I focused on accents typical of computers of that era. Monolithic cases, thick bezels around the display, convex CRT screen, ventilation slots.
A solution I’m particularly pleased with is moving the sound controls from the side of the phone to the front of the case and the rounded bezel around the display, which fantastically mimics the convex screen.
When it comes to 3d printing. The model was designed from the very beginning with FDM printing on small 3D printers in mind. No part needs support, plus the textured printing plate works absolutely great here.
The biggest challenge in printing was the proper choice of filament. Unfortunately, it’s hard to find a filament with the color of old yellow plastic. The rescue came from Spectrum Filaments with its Ivory Beige filament.
I am very pleased with the end result. I see room for further development, perhaps new models in a similar style.
Finally, I encourage you to watch the presentation prepared especially for this project 🙂
